Sandy’s Cuisine is a very casual Pilipino restaurant with a grocery store component. Serves authentic cuisine representing various regions of the Philippines where the dishes are a blend with the influence of Chinese, Malay, and Spanish. You will find the restaurant is set up in a popular cafeteria-style known in the Philippines as “turo - turo”. This means “point - point” where you choose and point your dishes.
This layout is very unique and some people can find it confusing on their first visit. When you come in, you will notice the seating area on your right and further on the left, shelves of packaged food products. The actual food service is located at the back.
On my first visit, I noticed there are quite a number of dishes to select so it can be a challenge to figure out where to start. The line-up to order can be confusing as there no obvious signs but once you figure out that you are on the wrong end it is easy to find the beginning.
You will notice that the meals are cooked predominately with pork. Beef, chicken, and fish are available as well representing various Philippines regions. The dishes are rich with flavor so it is good to have some rice to complement it. Apparently the menu varies on a daily basis as a way to change it up keeping you on your toes. And perhaps getting you to come back for more.
To start off, we ordered rice with Pandam Chicken (nicely flavored grilled chicken wrapped with flavorful Pandam leaves served with sweet dipping sauce), Pinakbet (light vegetable dish with bitter melon, squash, orkas and assorted beans), Bangus (grilled half stuffed milkfish with pork, fish and vegetables), and the popular Pork Lechon (roasted pork in rich liver based sauce). If you adventurous, this is the perfect place to try different cuts of meats and sauces to tantalize your tastebuds.
This is not a place to impress a date with the cafeteria-style environment, décor and number of families with children who come here to eat on a regular basis. I would recommend doing take out which is perfect for a night of dining at home with a bottle of wine or another poison of your choice and maybe a good movie or jus dine over candlelight. You can impress your date with the amazing food pretending that you slaved all day cooking authentic Pilipino cuisine. Or set up a romantic picnic among the gorgeous flowers and nature scenery at the Queen Elizabeth Park.
Of course if you would like to take it to the next step, you can learn how to cook as chef and owner, Sandy Danza offers cooking lessons. Then you can do all you ingredient shopping in his store.
