Balthazar - History of Sex, Booze, Secret Tunnels and a Ghost:

"Balthazar restaurant has been many things, including a 1920s beauty school and boarding house for girls known as Maxine’s, named for its enterprising Parisian proprietor. In the 1930’s, it was used as a hideout for two of America’s most wanted fugitives (one of whom was captured here by J. Edgar Hoover himself). When times got tough, Madame Maxine used the lower floor of the school as a brothel, hence Balthazar’s “Bordello” room. There is also a filled-in tunnel (once used for rum-running during U.S. prohibition) connecting the building to boathouses at English Bay. A second, lesser-known tunnel connected the brothel to what was then called Rogers Mansion, now Romano’s Macaroni Grill; the Rogers Sugar magnate liked having his own secret point of access and egress to the brothel. You can still see where the tunnels were filled on the basement floor. But be wary if you venture down, though, the restaurant manager says he has received internal pages from the basement phone late at night even though he’s the only one there." - The Unknown City by John Mackie & Sarah Reeder

Just off of the vibrant Davie Street and minutes away from the gorgeous English Bay is this historic gem, Maxine’s Hideaway. Known in the West End as a restaurant / club for dining, lounging and dancing. This is a perfect spot if you want to get away from Vancouver's hustle and bustle of the Granville Street Entertainment District that tends to cater to a younger crowd.

With two rooms, each having their own ambience and uniqueness attracts people to come back again. This restaurant can hold up to 325 guests and you can find table and booth seating dimly lit creating an air of intimacy and a bit of mystery. Hang out in the Bordello Room where the Dj is playing cool hits while you and your date or a few close friends dine keeping hydrated with the poison of your choice. Lounge on the couches or dance by the booth. Or stay the main room, Hideaway Restaurant for dining (West Coast cuisine) and the live entertainment on the main stage. Shortly transformed into a dance floor.

Enjoy evenings filled with music, live performance and dance such as the burlesque cabaret style performed by Candy Girl Cabaret , group of beautiful women who are more than just looks as they will dance and sing into your hearts adding a sexy spin to it. This performance company danced a couple of numbers on Valentine's Day 2008 offering dinner and lounge shows in one evening. Shows are not to be missed and an experience to share with your sweetie. Just these performances will stir up some conversations with your date if you happen to run out of things to say.

Plan a night out! Enjoy an evening where you can dine, drink, dance and be entertained all under one roof until 2am.

Take advantage of the weekly food and drink specials without breaking your budget. For more information, be sure to call Balthazar or check out their website for more info.

Things to be aware of:
- Downtown parking can be a challenge. Allow yourself enough time to arrive at the venue. Couple paid parking lots by the London Drugs and Safeway are available otherwise plenty of meter parking along Davie and Denman Streets (only in effect until 8pm). So remember to bring some change.
- On evenings where there are live entertainment, the music volume is low enough to have a good conversations. Some people find it is hard to talk when the music is very loud to a point where you may find the need to scream to communicate.
- If you are not familiar with Vancouver's West End, bring the address and map with you just in case.
