For a unique atmosphere and dining experience be sure to come to Vancouver’s own Afghan Horsemen. Formerly on Broadway by Cambie Street, this restaurant is now located just outside of the entrance of Granville Island. (For those who remember, this location used to be the Cotton Club, one of the few Turkish restaurants in town.) It now welcomes new visitors and old friends to the new home of the Afghan Horsemen. Known for their authentic cuisine, unique atmosphere decorated with an array of fabrics, paraphernalias, lavish pillows, and the music playing in the background. Once you enter the restaurant, you will feel like you’ve been taken away.
This large venue is divided into three rooms that can accommodate groups of all sizes from an intimate table for two to larger groups. The two rooms are designed for dining on low tables while sitting cozy on their lavish pillows. These rooms can be intimate and is perfect for private functions. The main room has tables and booths for those who prefer sitting at the table. Come and dine in all the rooms for a well-rounded experience.
To add to your dining pleasure, bellydancing entertainment happens after 8:30pm over the weekends. As this place can get full, be sure you have a reservation to ensure your spot to enjoy this weekend entertainment.
Enjoy the Afghanistan cuisine available both meat and vegetarian with vegan options. Platters are an excellent option of sampling variety of items and add a great dining experience as an alternative to ordering individual plates. This ends up being an easy option as the menu is large and it can be a challenge deciding on what to order.
For our experience, we ordered the Vegetarian Special (variety plate includes baked rice with Kabuli topping - sautéed carrots, raisons & almonds, served with baked eggplant, Dahl - lentil stew, Salata with Feta Cheese, Pakawra - batter fried potatoes & Chaka), Aush Soup (Special Afghan Noodle Soup, cooked in a mixture of onions, garlic, tomatoes, different herbs, mixed with yogurt & mint flakes.), and Dolmah (Stuffed cabbage roll, topped with ground beef or vegetarian). The meals were lightly spiced and very tasty.
The service was attentive once you were sat down but since it was a Saturday night when we made the visit, the restaurant was filled with patrons enjoying the same delights. For future note, if you do plan to dine over the weekend, consider getting a reservation, that way you are sure to be seated promptly once you enter the door. That way you can start the dining experience off on a good note for your date.
This is one of Vancouver's hottest places to wine and dine your date. With the ambience, cuisine and entertainment, you can enjoy a great evening out of the ordinary. Or come out as a pre-theatre/show dinner. If nothing special is planned after dinner, perhaps head down to Granville Island for an evening stroll along the waters enjoying the waterfront view.
