Sweet Cherubim is one of the few places serving vegetarian cuisine made with wholesome and mainly organic ingredients with conscious awareness of the common dietary challenges (wheat free, dairy free, no eggs, and some vegan). All meals are low in fat with no food additives and preservatives with non-dairy options as well. Expect a variety of tastes influenced by various international cultures that will satisfy those who enjoy simple and/or vibrant flavors. Located on Commercial Drive just by the Britannia High School on the East Side of Vancouver. Perfect for those who live close to this area to enjoy this great food without having to travel to the west of Vancouver.
Friends of mine had positive comments about Sweet Cherubim and finally had the opportunity to encounter them for the first time at Earthsave annual Taste of Health Vegetarian event held at the Croatian Centre in September 2007. It was time to visit the restaurant/retail storefront.
Sweet Cherubim is a very casual and low-key small restaurant (may feel 'granola' to some visitors) but very friendly and warm atmosphere. A good place to grab some food or just to hang out for dessert. The owners also run the organic grocery store next door. So if you happen to need any items, you can pop right in and pick something up.
With the reasonable prices and the number of menu selections, this is one of the places to hit for vegetarian cuisine. Just checking out their chalkboard menu listing all their offerings will make your mouth water. The counter space is small but further along towards the back of the restaurant, you can see the window displaying the fresh hot food. This is self-serve environment where you need to come to the counter to pick up your order. The only challenge is figuring out what to order especially dessert if you saw the amazing window showcase when you came in. Each dessert displays card with an ingredient listing so you can read what you are getting.
In the last few visits, we had the entree special that comes with a main dish (with a choice of Dahls, Subji, Lasagna, Nut loaf, Moussaka and stews - Sweet and Sour Vegetable and Red Lentil - see below for description) with your choice of rice (brown or basmati) or bread and salad (the "Sunshine" miso dressing is the most popular) or the daily soup. I had it to go and found it was very filling considering you are getting it for about $11.00.
In the window showcase, they normally offer Nanaimo bars, bliss balls, cookies, chocolate dipped cookies, pies (raw fruit, pumpkin, apple, and chocolate cream), tofu cheesecake, carrot cake, mango pudding, date squares, and muffins. All the desserts are made with the same wholesome ingredients (wheat free, dairy free, no eggs, and some vegan) maintaining their conscious intention. The dessert selection will vary daily just to entice you to come back and enjoy their other offerings.
The pumpkin pie was amazing and very different from what I am used it. It is made raw (no cooking was involved in order to preserve the live enzymes) with a nutty crust and a mild spiced fruity pumpkin filling. And couldn’t help but to take home a couple of their wholesome cookies for snacking later.
If you are craving for a savory snack, try their samosas, tikki (wheat free) and/or pakoras. Be sure to come early in the day as I find that they run out by the time evening rolls around. It can be busy during the normal meal hours, so if time is of the essence, have the food to go and enjoy in the comforts of your own home with candles, music, and wine or even a movie for an evening under $12.00 per person. Or take out and head to the park nearby for a romantic picnic rendezvous.
Some things to be aware of is the challenge to locate this restaurant, as the front banner is difficult to see. Be sure to bring the address along in case but I’m sure the locals will know where the restaurant is located when you mention the name. Since it is located on Commercial Drive, there are plenty of street meter parking otherwise try parking in the neighbourhood. If you do end up dining at the restaurant and want to your leftovers, there is an additional charge for take out boxes.
While this place isn’t exactly ideal for a first date to make an impression, it is one those places you can go for a night out or in with someone you’ve known for sometime especially if the person is a vegetarian. There are not a lot of upscale strictly vegetarian restaurants to choose from and most local restaurants are moving into the trend of offering vegetarian dishes in their regular menu. If you want something wholesome and down to earth, this may be the place, but be sure to visit and taste it for yourself.
