If you love your meat and like it barbecued with the comforts of the southern style, then Memphis Blues Barbecue House is the place. A local hang out joint that serves up a variety of cuts of meats served in their rich homemade smokey molasses Texans BBQ style sauce ensuring a finger lickin' experience. This is the place where you can fill up your protein needs and more. The locations can be found in the major areas/neighborhoods - Broadway, Commercial Drive and North Vancouver. Every time I pass by one of these locations, the restaurants are busy with a few sitting outside on the wooden benches. The restaurants are decorated with pictures and paraphernalias on the walls with music playing in the background.

It is a low key casual place designed with a funky cafeteria style so be sure to save a table or booth before ordering otherwise you may be stuck waiting around for a seat while holding your plate of grub. The servers will either call your name where you go pick your plate from the counter or you may be served directly to your table after they call your name. Self-serve only.

We visited the Commercial Drive location, generally small in size (although known for being the larger location) that could easily fit small groups sitting at the tables or booths or just have a table for two. If you are dining alone or with another, there are seats by the window.

Most entrees comes with the side fixin's of creamy coleslaw, fries, potato salad, their popular moist corn bread and baked beans in tomato sauce alongside your meal. The Memphis Blues Barbecue House’s most popular entrees are the pull pork and the brisket both available as an entree or sandwich.

If you do come out with a small group, the best deal is the platters, a selection of meats (also available with seafood like catfish and oysters if you order “The Priscilla” platter) and all the fixins' (creamy coleslaw, potato salad/fries, baked beans, and corn bread for each person) perfect for sharing. You get to sample different kinds of meats. Then wash it down with a pitcher of beer on tap or a glass of wine. The most popular platter is “The Memphis” platter as it offers a good selection of chicken, sausage, ribs, brisket, pulled pork and the usual fixin's of coleslaw, baked beans, corn bread. This platter is large enough to serve 2 - 4 people for about $35.00.

Memphis Blues Barbecue House had the lamb special available both as an entree and sandwich. I ordered the lamb dinner and sat down to wait for my name to be called for counter pick up. Not sure if it is because I tipped them (I wasn't sure if I should tip because it is self serve), the server served me after calling my name. My friend had to go pick hers up at the counter after they called her.

Unfortunately my lamb dish was not what I had expected and noticed this was a special not part of their regular menu offerings. A large portion of meat served with the usual side fixings along with a side of collard greens. The lamb was dry and not flavorful. I ended up adding Tabasco sauce and BBQ sauce for flavor and some heat. Even though my dish wasn't great, I took the leftovers home for sandwich wraps.

At first glance the entrees and platters looks good. My friend is a regular as she and her boyfriend comes here to dine often. So even with my bad lamb dinner experience, I would be interested in checking out their regular menu like the catfish and see how that turns out since I am not crazy about eating alot of red meat.

Is it a good place for a date? It is not a place to impress. If you know your date very well (I mean, very well), loves eating meat, and won't mind the low key casual dining with the self-service atmosphere, then this place may suit both of you. If in doubt, then perhaps something one level up at a good trendy dining would be better. Or have it to go and dine in the comforts of home with music and perhaps a good movie and wine/beer. Definitely leave the vegetarian friends at home.
