Kino Café Flamenco and Tapas Bar– 2006 Review by "Party Diva" of SMiLES+FLiRTS

Kino café is known for its’ tapas, sangria and their nightly entertainment. When you come inside the restaurant, you feel like you are in another place, as it is not modernly decorated. It looks run down with pictures of dancers and old movies advertisements along the walls resembling an old authentic hang out. This can look like a hole in the wall for some people and for others a funky very low-key place to hang out for beer or a pitcher of their infamous sangria.

As the menu doesn’t offer anything special as you will notice appetizers like calamari, nachos, brushettas and other Spanish influenced plates, salads, and meat entrees. The one attraction that makes this place unique is the entertainment performed nightly. So if you happen to finish watching a movie at the Park Theatre, you can stop by for a quick bite, some drinks and entertainment.

If you are into flamenco and Spanish music, then this is the place to go. Performed nightly from Wednesday to Sunday nights by dancers, students and even instructors. Each night they have different dancers performing offering a different flamenco flare and self-expression. During the weekends, it can get really busy as a lot of reservations are made for 8pm. So if you want a good seat be sure to make a reservation or just come early and hope you get a good seat by the stage. If you have a large group then you’ll definitely need to make one. Be sure to call them to see what other entertainment they offer as it changes.

The place gets packed literally by 9pm just before the performance starts. Sometimes you can find it can be standing room only and hope you can find at least a seat by the bar. The performance is usually about two hours long with intermissions. There are a couple of local flamenco dancers accompanied with a guitar player and a vocalist. They mix segments of dancing and solo guitar / vocals just to get exposure to both entertainments. As an option for you, bring extra change since these performers don’t charge cover at the door and rely on donations which allows them to come back for repeat performances.

Please note: it can be loud during intermission as they play latin music so talking can be a challenge. And this is one of the few places in Vancouver that take only cash, so be prepared in advance otherwise there are bank machines along Cambie Street (Canada Trust across the street on the west side of Cambie) and inside at the back of the Kino Café.

This is worth going at least once. It is a great place to take your date as it not only provides entertainment, but it can be a unique experience for both of you. Order a plate of nachos and a few drinks or share a pitch of sangria and sit back to enjoy the show.
