It is the first fine dining Filipino restaurant of its kind in Vancouver, as the others are designed to cater families leaving a feeling of mom and pop’s home cooking. Of course this depends on you if you would like to dine with the culture or go to somewhere that is modern and trendy catering to a sophisticated clientele. Try both to get a rounded experience and see which one suits you more.
As in the décor, the attention to detail is not missed in the food presentation, and table settings.
You will find that their authentic dishes are full of Spanish, Chinese and Malaysian influences. Just in one restaurant you get to experience the fusion of flavors, textures and aromas that make up the Philippino cuisine. You may find that the dishes tends to be on the heavy side with the dark and rich sauces. This simply can be balanced with a side of rice or simple rice noodles. If you are little hesitant to try the full experience of tasting the variety of meats, their West Coast influenced offerings are as equally good.
With so many menu offerings we couldn’t decide immediately. We were doing the ‘double takes’ as dishes passed by us. We were intrigued to know what they were as the dishes were set down on the tables nearby.
We wanted to experience a variety of authentic dishes. For starters we ordered the Grilled Tilapia (one of the popular fish dish served with ginger, soy sauce and cilantro also available with coconut milk), Kare-Kare (stew made with oxtail and vegetables cooked in peanut sauce, in the culture, it is spiced with chili and eaten with shrimp paste), and Kamote (deep-fried sweet potato dish which is a staple in the cuisine). Added a side of rice to balance the flavors and spices. Although a plate of Pancit, stir-fried noodle dish would have been a nice compliment as well.
To sweeten the end our meal, we ordered the Dark Chocolate cake (rich and gooey) and Leche Flan (rich and creamy, similar to a crème caramel). These desserts were sweet so it was good that is served in small portions.
Since Rekados Grill closes pretty early make an evening out. After dinner, you and your date can end the evening by walking along Main Street window-shopping at the consignment stores or the antique shops. Or stop in a cafe or restaurant for a drink and some live entertainment. Head south of King Edward Street where you can check out East is East Restaurant for belly dancing and flamenco performances, The Main has live bands playing, or the Cafe Montmartre, a quaint French cafe has live entertainment on most nights. Call these restaurants to confirm the performances/entertainment and times as they are subject to change.
