Rodney’s Oyster Bar, located in the popular Yaletown of Vancouver, is a low-key casual restaurant. As in the name of the restaurant, you can tell their specialty is oysters although they do carry other kinds of seafood to wet your appetite. A medium sized two-floor ocean/sea themed restaurant with the nets, boats and other nautical décor, gives a feeling that this is the place where sailors hung out. The restaurant stands out from the typical trendy and upscale restaurants located in the Yaletown neighborhood.
The service is very casual and served mainly by men who are there shucking the oysters for those who want the half shell experience. There are a couple fish tanks holding lobsters, a few tables on the main level and many more up on the second level, and a bar area that hosts the hot soups, and of course the oysters. You can sit and watch the shucking done in front of you. So for the single ladies, this can be fun night out over a glass of wine or a pint of beer while enjoying the great entertainment.
If you are not into oysters especially raw, they also offer other options like lobsters, prawns, mussels, clams, and whatever is available in season. Expect to find a good selection of oysters to choose from in addition to their regular menu including steak and pasta.
Their oysters are pricey for those who are on a budget, so consider going during their popular “Low Tide” (similar to happy hours) offered everyday from 3pm - 6pm. Here you’ll find other dishes and their raw oysters approximately half-price ($1.50 per oyster). Very reasonable compare to their regular priced menus. Please check what the current prices are as I have noticed it has gone up since I have dined here the first time. A number of other reviewers strongly recommend this time to go since you are getting the same oysters for a reasonable price point. Be aware that they decide on what type of oysters to serve you. From what I understand they will only serve one kind for “Low Tide” special.
For our experience, we ended up going for the “Low Tide” where the two of us enjoyed two dozen raw oysters on a half shell served on shaved ice with lemon wedges and freshly grated horseradish. To go with the raw oysters, they offer the usual hot sauce in addition to their five famous sauces you may be tempted to add to your oysters. Be sure to try White Boy Soul Sauce, Shallot Vinaigrette, Seawitch Sauce, Back From Hell, Seawitch Sauce, Back From Hell, Johnny Reb's Espanola Hot Sauce, or Johnny Reb's Espanola Hot Sauce. Each sauce has its’ unique flavoring and will vary in the degree of spiciness. These sauces are available for order thru their website. Check with the restaurant to see if they have them available for immediate purchase.
To continue our seafood dining, we ordered a plate of grilled butter prawns with toast to dip in the rich buttery sauce, Scallop Galette (lightly pan fried shredded potato coated scallops served with dipping sauce and mixed green salad) and the Indian salmon candy (sweetened dried salmon - moist and not very dry).
Their alcohol selection is limited as they only offers beer, wines, coolers and champagnes. Unfortunately that evening I was there, they were serving wine in an old fashioned glass (a typical short glass used for hi-balls) rather than wine glasses. I’ve noticed they didn’t have any wine glasses in the shelves behind them, something for you to be aware of.
This is one of the places I would recommend to have a date there especially if you want a casual evening out before a show or concert. It has a relaxed atmosphere where you can come dressed up or casual in your jeans. For immediate service, I’ve heard that it is best to dine on the main level. If you want a more intimate dining experience, then the second level would be perfect as it oversees the hustle and bustle of the main floor. It becomes a perfect place to people watch as well.
