Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!

Dating Tip #1 - Focus on your flirting target rather than yourself

- written by Mon Sun C. “Party Diva" of SMiLES+FLiRTS Singles Entertainment

Have you ever talked to someone whose mind was somewhere else? You might as well be talking to a wall on your first date.

Do you find yourself talking too much and forgetting to inquire about your flirting target? One thing that people are not aware of is that we tend to focus on ourselves and forget to include the other person.

Singles! Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you Focus on Your Flirting Target that will help get you the second date:

1. Keep your eye on the prize: Many times Singles allow themselves to be distracted and forget what they are doing. This can be a turn off as this tells your flirting target that he/she isn’t important. Be careful – who knows if someone else is eyeing your flirting target and just waiting for a chance to move in. Keep in mind to avoid staring at your flirting target.

2. Ask questions about your flirting target: Rather than just rambling about your resumé of achievement or rants, ask questions about your flirting target. Focus on him/her and ask questions that will develop commonality. This is a great opportunity to get to know them and see if your flirting target “qualifies” for another meeting/date.

3. Pay attention: How well do you listen to others without interrupting or adding your opinions? Do you allow them to finish their sentences? Would you be able to repeat back what was said to you? Develop your listening skills so that you can respond to what is being said – just by paying attention.

Be open-minded to what is being said to you rather than having a hidden agenda. Observe yourself – are you trying to find ways to prove them wrong or waiting for them to finish so that you get a chance to talk?

When you can listen well, you’re one step ahead of your competition because everyone wants to be heard. This includes YOU. Give your flirting target the courtesy of hearing what they have to say; otherwise, you may miss an important detail.

4. The verbal dance: Focus your attention on your flirting target and respond accordingly. For a relationship or friendship to develop, both persons must contribute and receive. Be aware of the connection that is happening between the two of you. Notice if your flirting target is reacting or responding negatively or positively. Re-focus your attention on the other like you would when you are talking to a friend. This verbal dance shows that you are interested in getting to know your flirting target.

Connect with your flirting target. Or, be prepared to have this attractive person kiss you good-bye instead of wanting more.
