East is East is a local casual restaurant found on the growing funky Main Street neighborhood and Kitsilano area. This casual restaurant is one of the places that serves Middle Eastern / Afghan cuisine with flavors from Istanbul to Calcutta. Come seat yourself, as seating is limited.
This small and cozy environment is decorated in an unique way so you will feel that you’ve been taken away from the West Coast. Expect to find pillows, small tables and wooden chairs in a dim lit atmosphere. In the Kitsilano venue, you can find seating in the small room in the back decorated very nicely away from the rest of the restaurant. This little room fits perfectly for a small group of up to six. Or sit at the tables perfect for sharing or sitting in small groups. The Main Street location is cozier as you are sitting along the walls. So you may end up hearing your neighbor’s conversation
When you first come in expect to start your dining experience a mini cup of masala chai, an opportunity to try an Indian spiced black tea with milk or soymilk depending on your dietary needs. It is a perfect way to start and get yourself settled just before you review the menu.
To start off try their unique shakes, smoothies or lassies in array of exotic flavors that only the Middle Eastern would ever put together. One of the most popular one is a shake made with ice cream, mango, pistachio, cardamom and rosewater called Himalayan High. As you will notice on the menu, they do not serve alcohol so keep that in mind if you so happen want a drink.
This restaurant is known for their limited menu of great soups, roti wraps (one or two with a choice of fillings, served with a small bowl of soup and salad) and the entrée known as the Eastern Plate (a silver metal plate served with salad, rice, small bowl of soup, roti and two side dishes with your choice of vegetarian and/or meat - lamb, salmon, chicken, and beef). We choose the Mango Butternut Squash and whipped Spinach with paneer and tomato. The portions are small so you may need to order more food or perhaps another unique drinks.
If you find the restaurant packed, then take out is available. Perhaps you can take advantage of it and head to the beach or the park for a dinner picnic while enjoying nature and the sunset. Remember to bring a warm blanket, as the evening gets chilly.
Come try a new experience and cuisine with that special someone for a date. For great food and intimate atmosphere in a quiet setting for great conversations. After coming here once, you may want to come back to try the other flavors as there are so many to choose from.
The Kitsilano location is affiliated with the Chai Gallery upstairs that offers a buffet dinner with entertainment like flamenco and belly dancing on some nights. Be sure to inquire before planning to dine there if you want to make an evening out of it with a banquet style dinner and entertainment.
