Persepolis Persian Restaurant – February 2007

112 West 13th Street (just off of Lonsdale)
North Vancouver
Tel: 604-990-0001

Persepolis, located in the North Vancouver where the Persian community resides, is one of the popular places known for dancing and night entertainment in a casual fare with candle lighting. This is where all ages come out on Fridays and Saturdays. Nightly entertainment consists of belly dancing, live instrumental music and later DJ of many Persian flavors.

It is looks run down yet it packs a lot of people in one place. It is large as it caters to large and small groups. For a warmer setting you can sit by the fireplace not too far off the dance floor where things can really get heated up there. Persians love to dance so when a song is playing, without hesitation, they are up and moving with their friends, family and their kids. This is a restaurant that welcomes families of all ages.

Their menu offers a wide variety of choices even for the vegetarians. They offer kebabs, stews, appetizers, meat entrees, salads, soups and desserts. Persian’s most popular dishes are the stews and the kebabs. So when you order these, you know you won’t go wrong. They also have a full bar if you choose. Their wine list is limited but I am sure you will find something that will go perfectly with your dish.

We started off with a glass of house red wine and Budwiser beer. For the main entrée, we had ordered one of the popular stew and vegetarian platter (served with iceberg salad, homous, pita bread, eggplant dip, dolmeh – rice wrapped with grape leaves with a side of basmati rice). Unfortunately the waitress was new and brought out a lamb shank dish with a large pilaf of basmati rice, which we didn’t order. Only to find out later that they didn’t have any stew left. So make sure to double-check what you have ordered to avoid surprises!

Was pleased with the vegetarian platter as it offered a variety of sides on one plate. Unfortunately the lamb shank didn’t have any flavor and found it bland. You may also find the basmati rice on the dry side. For your best bet as other Persians have told me, order their popular dishes (stews and kebabs) or come for appetizers and drinks while enjoying the nightly entertainment.

Their menu prices are a few dollars more than the other Persian restaurants in the North and West Vancouver to cover for the nightly entertainment. So if you would like a full Persian experience with some dancing and entertainment, then Persepolis is the place to go.
