Kashcool Persian Restaurant – February 2007

North Vancouver

Kashcool Persian Restaurant is located in the industrial part of North Vancouver. It is a small restaurant that stands out on the block with the neon lights and small-enclosed patio. It was confusing at first to find this location as the street name seems to change, but keep heading South until to see this small restaurant on your left hand side.

This is one of the few restaurants that I have dined at that offers the traditional Persian cuisine with the focus on flavors and spices.

When you come in, you will feel like you have been taken to somewhere to the Middle East with the music playing in the background and the décor. It is really decorated with ornaments and wall decorations. Some people might find this place tacky because of this but don’t let the looks of it distract you from dining here. In the middle of the restaurant is a water fountain with a few gold fishes swimming about. They have very little table seating, as there are many booths that can fit medium size groups or perhaps for two perfect if you want to be intimate.

For drinks, they don’t offer a lot in wines but do offer a few other concoctions that can be made for your pleasure. For the non-alcoholic drinkers, try their Persian teas for something different.

They have a lot to choose from for starters. As a first-timer, I didn’t know where to begin and had asked the waitress for some help. Most popular starters were their eggplant dip, soups, and homous (mixed with parsley, garlic and topped with carmelized onions) served with flatbread instead of pita.

Following the Persian tradition, Kashcool serves a plate of flatbread, panir (Persian feta cheese), sliced tomatoes and onions and parsley before your meal. This comes complimentary with your meal.

For the main meal, I tried one of their popular stews – Gheymeh Bodemjahn (tomato based with beans, onions, dried lime and chicken) served with a plate of heaping pilaf of basmati rice. The stew was amazing and there were some odd spices that I couldn’t figure out that add to the authenticity of the meal.

Kashcool is also available for lunch especially since there are a lot of businesses around. So pop by if you are in the neighborhood. They offer great lunch specials that offer a lot of kebabs and stews for those quick bites and a good dining value. Please note that they do close early in the evenings so call ahead to make reservations.

For an unique dining experience where a lot of Persians come to eat where the price is right, this is a good place to take your date. It is a unique experience for traditional Persian food.
