This contemporary Japanese restaurant is one of the popular places for fusion tapas in Yaletown. Medium sized restaurant designed with an industrial flair is the perfect setting for an open kitchen where you get to see chefs busy creatively at work. This restaurant attracts the young-at-heart making this a hip place to be and be seen. With the summer approaching, sit outside and enjoy their patio or just hang inside with your date by the bar where all the action is.
Be sure to check out their popular sake-tinis like their Sake Yuzu Mojito with a scoop of sorbet. Like green tea? Experience the Zen Cocktail, matcha green tea with vodka. Or taste their other variations of tea mixed with various liqueurs and alcohol. If you love sake, then this is a place to check out Shiru-Bay's offerings with a few of them served cold from a bamboo cup.
If you are new to the restaurant and don't know what to order, consider the Tasting Menu where you to sample anywhere from 8, 10 or 11 dishes (prices ranging from $25 and up). This is an opportunity to take advantage of sampling their signature dishes. Shiru Bay's menu encompasses a wide range of dishes from salads to light dishes to seafood to rice/noodles and of course sushi. In one tasting some of the dishes we got were Tofu and Sansai salad, Steam mussels, Smoked Black Cod, Hiaburi Shime Samba (cured mackeral seared in front of your eyes, later served as sashimi and in a salad), Scallops and Squid, sushi (served on rectangular rice shapes, unlike the seaweed rolled sushi), and Negitoro and Avocado Tartare served with garlic toast. To view what Shiru Bay offers, be sure to visit the website as the images gives you an idea of what you would be getting.
Reservations are a must as this place gets busy. Going on a slow night like Sunday for a date is a good idea as you will find it is quieter making it a perfect environment to have good conversations.
Things to note:
1. Shiru Bay gets busy as you get closer to the weekend so it is best to make a reservation ahead of time. Of course the best is to go on a slow night. This way you will avoid waiting around especially since Yaletown restaurants can get busy at this time of the week.
2. If you do end up going on a popular night, you may find that with the amount of diners, it may be hard to have an intimate conversation with your date.
3. As with all restaurants, service level can change depending on the number of patrons. For our evening the service was very attentive and the chefs catered the tasting menu to our dietary requirements.
4.If it is a slow night, request to sit on a larger table as it was a challenge to fit the dishes and our drinks. Food were served on large plates as part of the presentation that took quiet a bit of space.
