La Casita – Mexican Restaurant - 2008 Review by "Party Diva" of SMiLES+FLiRTS Singles Entertainment Co.

La Casita is a small place located on the outskirt of Gastown just across from the old Woodward location. This place is known for their authentic Mexican cuisine. Whenever I have passed by this restaurant I am intrigued by how busy it is, a sign indicating it’s a good place to dine.

La Casita is very casual and intimate at the same time. On the Friday evening we went, the restaurant was close to full capacity with quite a few people sitting at the bar. Come very casual or dressed up whether you are coming off of work, heading to the nightclub in Gastown afterwards or for a pre-dinner show/theatre experience. Just being in there you will find that you are taken to a different place with the eclectic décor, memorabilias and the Latin music playing in the air. The restaurant can accommodate large parties as they have a lower level devoted to gatherings.

Want something special with your sweetie? Be sure to inquire about dining in the small alcove on the west side of the restaurant. This is a little secluded spot for candlelight dining for two is the romantic spot to be in.

You will definitely find tequila here as the choice of poison but with a full bar offering, you can order any other drink of your choice. Whether it is margaritas served on ice or Mexican beers served by the bottle or in a glass.

After you are seated, homemade nachos and salsa (smooth rather than chunky) is served. Perfect for nibbling while deciding on your order. Expect nothing but authentic Mexican cuisine served with rice, beans and slaw. The menu offers a good selection of appetizers, main entrees and combination platters offering a variety of items that you can have on one plate (usually a main entree and appetizers served with rice, beans, sour cream and of course cheese). The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous depending on the size you order. Some dishes are west coast influenced such as the fish dishes (perfect for those who prefer a lighter choice of meat) otherwise chicken, beef and pork is available.

To start off the evening, we had the Casita Sunrise (similar to a tequila sunrise mixed with tequila, grenadine, and grapefruit). We opted to share a tostada appetizer topped with shrimp mixed in a refreshing lime dressing topped with fresh slices of avocado and tomato salsa. Then one of the combination platters – blackend cod served over rice, shrimp, two flautas filled with potato and onions, coleslaw salad, plain tortillas, side of beans topped with sour cream and cheese. This combination platter was perfect for sharing for two females or a good portion for a person with a healthy appetite. For the next visit, I would like to try their mole served with chicken wings as one of their appetizers as I am in the search for a good mole with flavor in the Vancouver.

End the dining experience on a sweet note with churros (fried dough pastry) filled with chocolate.

This is not a place that I would recommend to impress unless you know your date will appreciate the characteristics of the restaurant. I will leave this one to use your best judgement. La Casita one of the places to consider for casual dining and authentic cuisine.

Things to note:
- Parking in Gastown can be a challenge as there is meter parking throughout in front of the restaurant. Consider the parking at the parkades on Cordova or Water Street.
- Music can get loud. When we got in, the music was at a good volume until later the server decided to turn the volume up.
- The restaurant and service can be a hit and miss for some so if you do plan to go intend to have a good time with no expectations.
