India Gate is one of the oldest restaurants in the Entertainment district of downtown Vancouver. This restaurant with its’ large window front, attracts curious diners walking along Robson Street to stop, look inside and read their menu offerings. This is one of the places not to be missed as Indian Gate serves authentic North Indian cuisine catering to meat lovers and vegetarians. The décor is a little run down but the East Indian artwork throughout the restaurant adds to the atmosphere. Come casual or dressed up and enjoy an evening dinner/pre theater or a lunch rendezvous with your sweetie. Indian Gate offers lunch time specials that is perfect for those who would like to try their offerings or on a tight budget and want to get the same dining experience without breaking the bank.

The servers are East Indian themselves offering authenticity to the dining experience. This is a medium-large restaurant that can cater to small to large groups and probably best to call to make a reservation if you are planning to bring in a large group of good company.

After we were seated, Papadums and mint chutney is served while we decide on what to order. In addition to the typical curries East Indians are known for, be sure to check out their popular dishes like butter chicken, tikka plates and pakoras. While you are waiting for your order, enjoy a cup of hot masala chai, a semi-sweet spiced black milk tea. Beers, wine, ciders and other spirits are available as another alternative. Be sure to try the Lassi, a yogurt smoothie available in flavors of mango, sour, salty and plain. This is a perfect compliment to any meal where you might need to calm the taste buds due to the spiciness in the food. All dishes are made to your desire ranging from mild to medium to hot.

For our experience, had the medium hot lamb curry and Tandoori chicken (with vegetables served on a hot plate) served with plates of rice and choice of naan (made with white flour) or roti (made with whole wheat flour). No meal is complete without dessert. So we devoured a dish of Kulfi, homemade Indian ice cream (creamed milk with nuts). Gulab Jaman, milk balls with sugar syrup and rose water is a popular dessert to try.

For an easy and casual dining be sure to stop by Indian Gate to enjoy their succulent cuisine for a truly eastern experience. Whether you are meeting your Date there or stopping by after shopping from Winners or Future Shop just across the street. Or as pre-theatre, movie or concert treat. One of Vancouver downtown’s gem not to be missed.
