Newly opened in March 2008, this Mexican restaurant is located in the heart of Yaletown. A contemporary restaurant with simple décor is designed with a relaxed dining atmosphere where you can come dressy casual or all dressed up. Tequila Kitchen can sit a table for two up to small-medium sized groups fitting a total of 40 people with plenty of elbowroom. With the romantic setting and the dim lighting, you will find that it is perfect for a date night where you and your sweetie can sit in a booth from other diners. The floor is spacious enough for people to dance salsa with the Latin music playing in the background. Or hang out at the bar (that seats approximately 6 people) in the back for a drink while mingling with the bartender. Not far from the front entrance is a small open kitchen for those who want to see where the action is.

Here at the Tequila Kitchen, expect to find the cuisine influenced by the flavors of the West Coast adding a unique flavor to the restaurant offerings in Yaletown. Being a Mexican restaurant, expect nothing but tequila on the menu. Be sure to take advantage of their flights offerings especially if you are new to tequila or want to try something new. Here is your chance to sample some of the best tequila. Or just chill with a bottle of beer to start off the evening. They have finalized their a la carte menu but opted for their 5 courses 8 items tasting menu we had that evening. Be sure to take advantage of it while it is still offered.

Be sure to try their specialty drinks like the popular hibiscus rose margarita on ice. The margaritas are worth trying with their different mixtures all salted at the rim. All their juices for their drinks are made fresh on a daily basis.

Since this was our first time here, we opted for the tasting menu to sample. After we ordered, we were served requeson, a Mexican cheese blended with herbs, serron chili and lime served with baked tortilla strips.

As each dish from the tasting menu was served, our Mexican server described what the dishes were and suggestions on how to eat it the Mexican way. I personally wanted to experience the culture and the cuisine so I was pleased with her suggestions. Our first dish was Ceviche Duo halibut lime and octopus (chile de arbol salsa). Followed by the Tostaditas, two oven-baked tortillas one topped with a mix of sautéed mushrooms and one with rajas (sliced poblano peppers simmered with cheese, corn and onions). The Sopa de frijol al oregano (black bean soup with a touch of Mexican oregano) was very tasty and rich. Then served on a plate were Pato en Salsa de Jamaica (slow roasted duck breast in a hibiscus and Serrano chile glaze), Cordero en Salsa Borracha (bralsed lamb shank prepared in our own drunken sauce) and Costillitas Adobados (chile glazed spicy and saucy pork ribs) served with vegetables and cactus salad

Since we are into trying the unusual we ordered a side cactus salad to taste. The cactus was pickled and was mixed with onions, tomatoes and cheese. Found it to be very similar to a Greek salad.

To sweeten the tasting experience, we had the Palanqueta de Nuez con Helado y salsa de chocolate abuelita y cajeta (walnut praline topped with ice cream and Mexican chocolate and milk caramel sauce).

This is one of the funky places to chill out in Yaletown. Perfect for hanging out for drinks and a few tapas. If your date is into west coast fusion food, this place will work for a night out. If you are concerned how busy it will be, be sure to make a reservation, as this venue filled up quickly. Our Mexican server provided an excellent service as she checked on us quite often.

Things to note
- If you are looking for an authentic Mexican cuisine, this may not be the place as you will notice the items are West Coast inspired.

- Since it is in Yaletown, parking may be a challenge so prepare to drive around looking for a spot.

- Be sure to bring the address with you in case you may end up missing the place. With so many sandwich boards and patios along the Mainland Street, you can easily miss the restaurant.
